Biographie

Biography

Born in Transylvania, lives and works in Paris and Bordeaux, France. Alexandra Mas immerged into the arts when only an infant. At 14 years old she began her formal education at the art institution in Bucharest. She meet the famous engraver Marcel Chirnoaga, who mentored her for a number of years. She starts already to show her work in several national and international shows, like the bi- annual international small engravings show in Uzice. Alexandra attended UNAB (the National University of Art, Bucharest), where she majored in Graphic Design under the tutelage of Professor Mihai Manescu. It was during these years that Alexandra exhibited her artwork twice at the annual “Autumn Show” in Bucharest, as well as in numerous student shows. In addition, her engravings were presented in a show in Japan.

Her regular visits to Paris resulted in a desire to continue her instruction there, and led to her enrolling at the Modern Art and Design School in 2001. There, she graduated at the top of her class in Design and Interior Architecture. She continued to exhibit work during this period, including at the “Autumn Salon” in Constanta, a happening organized in 2006 in Paris in collaboration with VJ Daniel Gontz and a ballet dancer, and a solo show sponsored by HBV in Bucharest.
Alexandra’s work was highly regarded, and led to a number of opportunities in the commercial world, including Christian Dior, the Louvre Museum, Marsu Productions, and other private commands. From 2006 to 2009 Alexandra left Europe for California, where she continued to paint and deliver commercial graphic design projects while directing and teaching at a talent school for young children in Beverly Hills.

She comes back to France in 2009 decided to dedicate her-self entirely to her artwork. Her inspiration comes from contemporaneous ballet and music, the collective memory and sensitive social subjects like ecology, consumerism or inner questioning.  Her intellectual path takes us to a eclectic universe full of sensorial complexity. The paintings are bold and expressive but yet detailed, somehow a permanent contradiction between force and lightness finds place on her canvas. The pictographies bring together body painting, painting, computer free hand and photography for strong intriguing images.

“Art is a constant road between our lives and our souls. Through my work and its symbols I try to give a certain feeling of transgressing harmony and inner quest.”
